PPL FLEX Emergency Equipment Storage Building 1920 1440 Sordoni Construction

Sordoni led the Design-Build Team to engineer, procure and construct a FLEX Emergency Equipment Storage Building for the PPL Susquehanna Steam Electric Station. The building is required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in response to the events that occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Team members include Hemmler + Camayd Architects, Mesa Associates, Smith Miller Associates, and RJD Engineering.

Located within the Protected Area of the plant, the 10,000 SF building is engineered to withstand natural disasters, including seismic events and tornado and hurricane winds in excess of 300 MPH. Building construction is primarily concrete, with over 3,000 cubic yards of concrete and 300 tons of reinforcing steel, with a 3.5’ thick mat slab and 1.5’ thick roof and walls. A 97,000 lb concrete and steel sliding door allows equipment to deploy. Stored inside the building will be pumper trucks, portable emergency generators and debris-moving equipment to keep critical functions of the plant operational in a “beyond design basis” event. Construction began in mid-May and was completed in December 2014.
