Education Construction

Sordoni was the Design-Builder for Alvernia University’s Pottsville CollegeTowne campus. The project site, a former grocery store, was transformed into a community-based campus focused on developing students to enter and enhance the region’s workforce including a RN to BSN completion curriculum and other Adult Education programs.

The new campus, located at 500 Progress Avenue, features classrooms, conference and meeting rooms and lab spaces. In addition, Alvernia’s O’Pake Institute will partner with Schuylkill County-based students for a business incubator. The remainder of the space will be utilized for retail and community partnerships.

Design work began in April 2022 and construction started in June 2022. The team encountered asbestos in the flooring mastic that had to be removed entirely and performed substantial floor trenching for the new underslab utilities in what was a wide-open floor plan. The old roof on the building began to leak and the team successfully protected the new & ongoing work inside. As the Design-Builder, Sordoni was also able to control the design of the roof-top units more effectively ensuring a shorter lead time. The project was substantially completed in January 2023, just in time for the first students to start the inaugural semester.
