Housing Construction

Design-Build

Sordoni Construction provided Design-Build services for the expansion of an outdoor terrace at the Jewish Home of Eastern PA. Located in Scranton, the Jewish Home (JHEP) provides short-term rehabilitation, long-term skilled nursing, and Alzheimer’s care for more than 180 residents.

JHEP had an existing outdoor terrace at the front elevation of the building that was popular gathering spot for residents, staff, and visitors. JHEP engaged an architect to sketch a conceptual design to double the size of the terrace, and Sordoni was then brought on board to develop the concept into a cost-effective solution. Working with Reuther + Bowen, structural and civil engineers, the Sordoni team and JHEP collaborated on ways to economize the original design concept while retaining its aesthetic appeal. The original semi-circular shape was modified into a segmented design, a manufactured railing system was utilized, and the exposed elevation of concrete was accented with brick to match the existing building. Sordoni was able to provide JHEP with a 20% cost savings over the initial design.

During construction, site logistics were coordinated with JHEP to maintain safety and minimize impact on residents. The project was completed in August 2018.
