Healthcare Construction
Sordoni was the Construction Manager for this renovation project for the Children’s Service Center. The building, located on Academy Street in Wilkes-Barre, was purchased to address CSC’s increasing demand and need for additional space to further their ability to provide their services to those in need. The scope of work included architectural and MEP renovations along with demolition of the existing space with some office space to remain. A reception & waiting room, two bathrooms, 10 offices and two meeting rooms were added.
A major challenge with any existing, older building, is to understand and remediate the existing conditions uncovered during the project. Some of the first floor joists had substantial termite damage and were temporarily supported by wooden posts, jack columns and other shoring measures. All the existing floor joists and subfloor in this entire area were completely replaced. A majority of the floor in the building was concrete slab on grade with the floor levels varying. Large voids were also discovered underneath the floor which are presumed to have been caused by the Agnes Flood of 1972 which devastated the Wyoming Valley.
The project commenced on June 29th and substantial completion was achieved on November 16, 2020 with savings being returned to the Owner.
